Heritage weddings, done properly

Many couples come to the Central Region because of what is here: the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina, and the return they represent for families in the diaspora. These are memorial sites of the transatlantic slave trade, managed as national monuments, and they deserve to be treated as such.

If the castles are part of your plan, go through the site management. Photography and filming need permission and there are fees; some spaces — the dungeons above all — are places of remembrance and not backdrops. Take the guidance the staff give you, and let a local planner who has done it before handle the arrangements. Done with care, it is profoundly moving. Done carelessly, it is the one thing people will remember about your wedding, for the wrong reason.

Rooms are the constraint

Cape Coast and Elmina have a limited number of good rooms relative to the size of a Ghanaian guest list, and most of them sit in a handful of coastal properties. If your guests are flying in, hold a block of rooms as soon as the date is fixed — earlier than you would anywhere else in this guide — and plan a coach from Accra rather than assuming people will arrange their own transport for a three-hour drive.

Festival weekends

The Central Region’s festival calendar fills the same rooms you want. Oguaa Fetu Afahye brings large crowds to Cape Coast around the start of September, and Elmina’s Bakatue falls in July. They are wonderful to witness and very difficult to marry alongside: accommodation goes, the roads are busy and vendors are working. Check the dates for your year before you commit, and consider making a festival part of the trip rather than a competitor to it.

Season

The main rains run roughly from April into June or July, with a lighter spell around September and October. December to February is dry and is when most diaspora weddings happen, so book early for those dates. Whatever the month, a coastal reception needs a covered alternative.

Fante families and the engagement

Fante families are Akan and matrilineal, and the engagement follows the familiar shape — the knocking, the list, the spokespeople, the calling of the bride — with local differences the families themselves will set out. Vendors

The local pool is smaller than Accra’s and often excellent, particularly for photography — the light here is the reason so many couples come. For specialist decor or a large production, couples do bring vendors from Accra, roughly three hours away, and their travel and accommodation should be in the quote from the beginning.
