The engagement is the event
In Kumasi the traditional marriage is not a warm-up. Families here hold the customs closely, the spokespeople (okyeame) do the talking, and the day is judged by whether it was done properly. Asante families are matrilineal, so the bride’s maternal family — her mother’s brothers in particular — carry real authority in the arrangements. Ask who must be consulted before you fix a single date.

Kente, properly sourced
Kumasi is the reason couples all over Ghana say “order the cloth first”. Hand-woven kente from the weaving villages north-east of the city takes weeks, not days, and the good weavers are busy in wedding season. If you want a custom design, or matched cloth for the couple and the parents, start months out and expect to pay a deposit against loom time.
Two practical warnings. Hand-woven and machine-printed cloth sit at completely different prices and look completely different in photographs, so know which you are buying. And confirm the finished width and length before weaving starts — altering woven kente afterwards is not really a thing.
The Saturday problem
Funerals are held on Saturdays across Ashanti, and they are large. That means canopies, plastic chairs, cooking pots, sound systems, caterers and even the hall you want are competing with several funerals on the same day, in the same city. It also means some of your guests genuinely have somewhere else to be.
Book hire items and caterers earlier than you would in Accra, confirm the delivery window in writing, and ask the venue outright what else is on the premises that day. A Friday ceremony or a Sunday reception sidesteps the whole thing.
Prices, and where the vendors come from
Kumasi is usually cheaper than Accra for the same standard of catering, decor and venue hire. The exception is the specialist end — some couples still bring a photographer, videographer or planner from Accra, and when they do, travel and accommodation belong in the quote from the start rather than as a surprise at the end. The city is roughly a four to five hour drive from Accra, or about an hour in the air.
Weather
Kumasi is greener and wetter than the coast. The heavy rains run roughly from March into July with a second spell around September and October, and even in the dry season an afternoon downpour is not unusual. Any outdoor plan here needs a canopy you would be happy to be photographed under, not a tarpaulin bought on the morning.
