A beach wedding that actually works

The Western Region coast is why couples come here, and a ceremony on the sand at golden hour is genuinely one of the most beautiful things you can do in Ghana. It is also the plan most often defeated by physics. Four things to settle before you book:

• Wind. Loose petals, unweighted arches, floaty stationery and thin fabric all lose to a sea breeze. Brief your decorator that the design has to be built for wind, and weight everything.
• Sound. Wind and surf eat a PA and a celebrant’s voice. Budget for proper microphones and someone who has run sound on a beach before.
• Tide and sunset. The usable strip of sand and the light you are paying a photographer for both move by the day. Pick the ceremony time around them, not around the invitation you have already designed.
• Heels, sand and elders. Provide a firm walkway and seating in shade. Your older guests will remember whether you thought about them.

Ask the resort in writing about a wet-weather alternative, a noise curfew, whether the beach is private on the day, and whether you may bring outside caterers.

The wettest coast

South-western Ghana gets more rain than anywhere else on the coast. The heavy season runs roughly from April into July, with a second spell around October. Harmattan is milder here than in the north, so the dry months around December to February are the safest bet for an outdoor date — which is also when the resorts are fullest.

Whatever the month, book an indoor or covered option you would actually be content with, and agree the call-off time in advance with the planner. Nobody makes a good decision about a marquee two hours before the guests arrive.

Local vendors, and when to import

Takoradi has a real vendor community — the oil and gas industry brought a professional events market with it — and prices are generally below Accra’s. The pool is smaller at the specialist end, so couples often bring a photographer or planner down from Accra. It is about a four hour drive along the coast road, or a short domestic flight, and either way the travel, the accommodation and any site-visit day belong in the quote.

Two ceremonies, one coast

The engagement is usually held at the bride’s family home in the city, with canopies, chairs, cloth and catering hired in.
